I’m honored to have my “Saint Agatha” included in a terrific essay by @womeninthepicture 🖤 She’s currently on display at @wildharesalonandgallery 12-5 today. The only place you can view amazing art AND book a hair appt 💅 St Agatha, the early christian virgin martyr from Catania in Sicily was maimed and murdered by the Romans in the 3rd century CE for her belief in Jesus, but also - according to some sources- for rejecting the amorous advances of the Roman prefect Quintianus. They dreamt up the particularly violent torture of cutting off her breasts after a month of imprisonment in a brothel where she was raped and assaulted in an effort to convince her to renounce her faith and become the wife of Quintianus. She was 15 years old. Whether the story is true or not, Agatha has been celebrated as a paragon of virtue, and her steadfast chastity in the face of a terrible ordeal made her a role model in centuries of Christian art for female devotees. But her presence in the history of art makes her legacy that bit darker. Agatha was a popular subject matter in art from 1300- 1700 - presumably because her story offered the chance to own an image of a bare-breasted woman subjected to indignities without any moral opprobrium cast on the owner of the picture. Renaissance artist Sebastiano del Piombo (bottom right) gives us an example of sadomasochistic sexual torture in an image privately produced for a male patron- Cardinal Rangoni. This makes for uncomfortable contemplation. The tale of St. Agatha is a rich source for thinking about women's bodies today. Contemporary artist Caitlin Karolczak (main image) draws attention to issues of bodily augmentation and mutilation in the pursuit of creating an image of idealized femininity through the figure of St. Agatha. Often the violence is suppressed and she appears dressed as a noblewoman with her breasts intact, like panna cotta on a plate, ( top right, by Lorenzo Lippi) as an abstracted offering of female sex organs like a delicacy to consume and tear apart at liberty with our gazes. Oh, and the bit that really sticks in the throat is that high culture/ art makes all of this seem normal, or dare we say, even beautiful.

I’ve been getting a lot of feedback over the years from people who would like to collect original works of art but so far have been unable to - which has led to this experiment in affordable art collecting. If you’re interested in this concept (or just want to support my art making in the most minimal way possible) please follow the Patreon link in my bio! I’m still hoping to meet my original goal of 30 patrons before giving away this valuable painting and appreciate your interest! 🖤 #affordableart #mplsart #aaw2018 #oilpainting
